Last week i was fortunate to work with Julia Burns - a great, young and dedicated artist - on photographing her latest art installation at Gaffa Gallery.
The Death of Hermine is a sculpture installation of a woman made out of soap, dressed in her best, sitting in a chair, looking at a window, while warm water from an overhanging container continuously drips on her, distorting her features and melting her head away.
What I understood from Julia is that the artwork depicts a state in which a lot of women experience in modern society, where a woman is so psychologically trapped in her own fears and insecurities, especially concerning her appearance and age, that she would metaphorically speaking, sit-frozen and hide her true self away, slowly being worn out by her own fears, and too scared to break free from her detrimental state in her own mind.
I really loved the concept, and was very impressed with Julia and her gift in being able to conceptualise modern issues in her great quality art.
